Velasquez window

Why does my work seem so much better when I am copying, or in this case paraphrasing, somebody else? I guess the answer is obvious in the case of old masters, but am I really that much, or little, I should say, of a pissant artist after all these years? This is the first window I have been excited about for awhile, though I have loved working in general in an everyday enjoyment sort of way. In a way the latter is more comfortable. I don’t wake up in the night and worry about windows that are only adequate. Anyway, here are some pictures of work in progress on a window, one of many, for a church in Staten Island, for which they wanted to use the Velasquez painting below.
